The State of Maryland has no registration requirements for an aircraft. However, the aircraft must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). For information on FAA registration requirements, click here.
Maryland does impose a 6% sales tax on the purchase price of aircraft. New owners should expect to receive a notice from the Office of the Comptroller of Maryland once the aircraft’s registry is updated with the FAA. Owners may voluntarily disclose their purchase by mailing a check made out to the Comptroller of Maryland for the 6% tax, along with a copy of the Bill of Sale, to 301 W. Preston Street, Room 417, Baltimore, MD 21201.
For information, click here, or contact the Sales and Use Tax division of the Office of the Comptroller of Maryland at 410-260-7980 or toll-free 1-800-638-2937. Telephone assistance is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET.
